Day 45: MacKinaw Island - no cars allowed!

July 16, 2025: We left Chebogyan and headed up to MacKinaw City, which is at the northeast tip of the Michigan peninsula. There is this island east of MacKinaw City, known as MacKinaw Island, where there are NO CARS. Horses and bicycles are the only forms of transportation other than your own feet. So of course, we had to go despite knowing in advance that it is just one step from being a Disney production studio. One of the major draws? Copious amounts of fudge production.

We took a tour of the fort, getting a little history lesson in the process and then, in true American style, we shopped, ate and drank. A good time was had by all.

We took a “taxi” to the fort and along the way got a glimpse of the Grand Hotel. Coincidentally, while on the ferry to MacKinaw Island, Rayma had commented that the structure (Grand Hotel) reminded her of the movie “Somewhere in Time” (Christopher Reeve, Jayne Seymour, 1979). Guess what? The Grand Hotel was the setting for the movie.

Nice view of the marina at MacKinaw Island taken from the “tea room” at the fort.
