Where We’re Going: Lake Michigan

Where we have been: If you just joined us, this journey started in Annapolis. We went up the Chesapeake and out the Delaware River to go north on the New Jersey shore. We then took the Hudson River all the way to Albany NY, where we got onto the Erie Canal. We then did the eastern half of the Erie, from Albany to Brewerton and then the western half of the canal to Buffalo. At Buffalo, we entered Lake Erie, heading west across eventually to South Bass Island. From there we went north to the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, and then to Lake Huron.

We have now hit Lake Michigan.

Lake Michigan is the second largest of the Great Lakes. In places its depth exceeds 900 feet. By way of comparison, Lake Michigan covers more territory than West Virginia or a combination of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut combined. It also has big storms - for instance the prediction for conditions on August 9 is 2-5 foot waves (during which Our Delite will be tied up to a dock).

Our Delite is currently at the Petoskey City Marina (just east/right of Charlevoix). “The Plan” for Lake Michigan has already been abandoned due to the upcoming storm. The Revised Plan is to leave Petoskey after the storm and head in the direction of Leland (just above Point Betsie), then Frankfort and then - conditions allowing - we will cross the lake over to Kewaunee. In Kewaunee, we are taking on a new crew and then heading south along the western shore, eventually arriving in Evanston (just north of Chicago).
