Days 77-78: The Wisconsin Shores
August 15-16, 2025: We left Sturgeon Bay to head south to Kewaunee, WI to meet up with Alyssa and Marcus who flew into Green Bay from California. Their flight got delayed so they did not actually arrive until 1 am but they arrived safe and all in one piece.
Kewaunee is a small town (pop. 2,700) and the marina was filled with fishing boats. Some of those boats left at 5 am, i.e., a few hours after we got to bed. But the locals were wonderful: We were treated by Mary, a Kewaunee local, to some Wisconsin cheese, cheese curds and smoked fish. Yum. Mary was impressed with the fact Tom had collected wildflowers and made a bouquet for the boat.
This morning we left Kewaunee and headed 65 miles south to Port Washington. We were in for a big surprise: a glassy lake to travel upon. The marine forecasts had been for at least very choppy water and not insignificant winds as well as rain and thunderstorms. We were thankful for the break.
As we were tying up in Port Washington’s marina, a storm rolled in. It did not last long and we were able to walk to dinner at the Twisted Willow, look at some of the shop windows, and return without getting wet but just barely. It has been raining off and on so obviously we had to play cards. That meant teaching Marcus how to play hearts. We should apologize now.
(It should be noted that one of the shops in Port Washington is a surf shop - that is how we learned that people actually surf the waves of Lake Michigan!)

Tomorrow we head further south to Kenosha, WI, roughly 50 miles. We are hoping the weather gods continue to smile upon us.
