Day 79: Mighty Lake Michigan

While the weather app said 1-3 foot waves, with 3-4 second intervals, and wind 10-13 mph, we were forewarned by a fishing boat that was coming back in that the waves were more like 4-5 feet.

Alyssa had to act as Zander’s security blanket.

Post-travel discussion among the captains.

The walk back from dinner - “touring” Kenosha.

The water was nearly the roughest Our Delite has had to endure thus far - certainly the longest trek of rough water. As Rayma was captaining, she kept hearing their Training Captain, Jeff Lewis, assure her to “trust the boat.” All’s well that ends well. And hoping that the next section of Lake Michigan will be kinder.

Boys just want to have fun - boat style.

Ever heard of a Leonburger? Well that is what this beautiful dog is called. We came across her on our post-dinner walk back to the boat.

Video Right: This again does not really depict the experience but it does show how much the boat got moved around (side to side and up and down). It’s longer than the usual videos we post.

August 17, 205: We were scheduled to head south to Kenosha WI from Port Washington, a distance of some 55 miles. Although the forecast wasn’t bad, we had some inkling that it was not going to be a nice ride. About a third of the way south along the western shore of Lake Michigan, the Coast Guard issued a small craft warning. We kept going.

The above video does not come c;lose to depicting the experience of 3-5 foot waves. But we survived!

Because arriving in the marina, getting fuel, etc. so we did not get lunch - so we had snacks at 3 pm and then dinner at 5:30.

Dinner at the Boathouse restaurant. (Note: Rayma had a well-deserved cocktail after captaining the boat in rough waters.

Obviously that cocktail improved her attitude.

Look out point at Kenosha - by this time the waves and swells had died down and the lake was nearly flat.

Southport Marina, Kenosha WI. We discovered, after arriving, that the marina has a pool, hot tub, shuffle board table, and ping pong table. As the weather for August 18 is predicted to be stormy, we are not going anywhere so it is good to know there will be recreational offerings. And it will be Tom’s birthday.
