Day 26: Up State NY rural beauty

June 25, 2025: We had an ambitious schedule today: 7 locks and almost 60 miles. We pushed off at Case Marina at 7 am. Except for the occasional local fisherman, we encountered no other boats all day. We didn’t even have to share a lock with another boat all day!

This solitude came about because of our routing the entire western Erie instead of going up to Oswego and up to the Trent-Severn (as originally planned). That is what most Loopers are doing. The other contributing factor is that there were problems at Lock 22 right after we went through it and it was closed for a couple of days. So we are ahead of other Loopers by a day or two. We arrived at our destination at 4:30.

One of the things that is really different from California? (Aside from the abundance of water.) Railroads. Railroads, railroads, and railroads. Running alongside the Hudson and the Erie and crossing them. So many railroads! This speaks of course to the Industrial Revolution taking place first on the east coast.

Although most of today’s journey was rural, we also saw multiple communities of houses on the river with docks. Some grand, some not so grand.
