Day 8: Croton-on-Hudson
We got a tour of the Rockefeller Estate, at least the main floor rooms and the formal gardens (which were lush and spectacular). It also included Nelson Rockefeller’s modern art collection although he installed many bronzes around the formal gardens as well. It was beautiful, informative and fun. Interestingly, John D. Rockefeller, the elder who started Standard Oil, did not want a “Gilded Age” palace but something more homey. Accordingly, though the house is clearly significant the rooms are not palatial and it is clear this was a home more than a show place.
After visiting the Rockefeller Estate, and scoring some lunch, we returned to Half Moon Bay Marina just in time for a downpour and this lovely aftermath.
