Days 31-32: Put-In Bay, Lake Erie

On the advice of a local at Mentor Harbor, we headed for Put-In Bay on South Bass Island in the western side of Lake Erie. We had to travel about 60+ miles with a impending storm on our heels. We got into the harbor (without a slip reservation) and tied on to the village marina just in time - a huge downpour started. Good Timing!

Once the downpour was over, we rented a golf cart and toured the island (all three miles of it). We talked to locals who grew up on the island. After talking to the dock master, we became informed that the Fourth of July weekend would fill up the marina and then some. We had not thought about the fact that marinas were likely to fill up for the holiday so we had to re-adjust our plans. We decided to stay in place until after the holiday because at Put-in Bay (PIB) it’s first come first serve, so we were in like Flynn. (Hi Jim!). The village dock staff has been the best. And now we will have a front row seat to the fireworks.

So the downpour to hot and humid is sort of the norm. But 8 am at 78 degrees and 47% humidity? Yikes.

From a Central California perspective, PIB is a combination of Shaver Lake, Pismo Beach and a dollop of Disneyland. There are some (very short) nature trails and the International Peace Memorial.
