Days 47-48: Drummond Island
From Mackinaw City to Drummond Island east across Lake Huron to the western side of the North Channel.
Morning view from the marina.
The fern meadow was great too.
Zander checking out the neighbor.
This island and its marina are quintessential old school summer lake - a wooden screen door that slaps, sandy beach with rocks and drift wood, wooden boathouse, etc. The office is run efficiently but very casual - they rented us a car to go to dinner for $20. The keys were left in it. The boss lady gave us lots of information winterizing and storing our boat when the time comes. Dogs were not highly suspect and kept on leash 24x7 or else but were allowed to roam a bit under supervision. This was a wonderful visit.
July 20-21: Hoping to see part of the infamous North Channel, we left MacKinaw City and headed southeast the Drummond Island Yacht Haven. Lake Huron was a little rough and windy but once we got to the channel where DeTour is located, conditions improved.
Drummond Island has 1,600 full time residents but its population swells to 3,800 during the summer. It is wooded - mostly pines, cedars and birch.
We went on a walk with Zander, including about two miles through a nature preserve. Not sure who enjoyed our little trek more - Zander or us. It was wonderfully shaded with a hint of pine in the air.
Could not resist taking a photo of the boathouse at the marina - we had to walk through it to get to the marina office and elsewhere.
