We had a prolonged downpour about 10 am. Weather forecast called for on-going rain through 1:30 - we were supposed to leave our slip by 11 am. The weather forecast also called for winds of 13-19 mph and waves 1-3 feet. These are not ideal conditions but waiting could mean it would get worse. It was Tom’s turn at the helm so we off we went. Not the roughest day but not far from it. We traveled up the Hudson about 15 nautical miles to the Rondout Yacht Basic (Connelly NY on the south side of the creek and Kingston NY on the north side) where we will stay for two nights. Rayma is starting Happy Hour after having spent a couple of hours trying to plan out the Trent-Severn versus Erie Canal-Buffalo routes that would allow friends to join the journey and have fun. This is more tedious and complicated than is immediately apparent because the presence of locks between marinas or anchorages affects the timing. It’s not done yet but Happy Hour starts at 3:30 so it was time to take a break to watch Jill and Tom make dinner. You can’t understand the size of her until you look at the people on the ground surrounding her. Glad we got to see her before France takes her back. At her feet, where her robe drapes the ground, lay a broken shackle and chains—a symbol of the abolishment of slavery. “The Statue of Liberty we now associate with immigration was a gift from France to commemorate the emancipation of American slaves. Before you lift your eyes to her torch of enlightenment, first pass them over the broken shackle and chains at her feet.” The opening words of Emma Lazarus's poem engraved on a plaque at the Statue of Liberty—"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"—have long evoked images of immigrants arriving on our shores, seeking a better life in The American Dream.
